In today's world, many students do not feel they have the time to sit down and read a good book, or they find the process of reading and creating the story in their mind boring compared to the instant gratification they get from the computer, t.v., X-box, PS2, Wii, etc. Despite this challenge, there are many excellent books on the market today and many excellent reads from the past that students should be reading!
Each year authors and illustrators are awarded for their creativity and to acknowledge their excellence which in turn creates list after list of good books for students to choose from when picking a book to read. You are probably familiar with The Newberry Medal and the Caldecott Medal, but there are also awards given to African-American authors and illustrators, awards to support authors in the Latino community, historical fiction awards, awards for books that have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature, and that is just the tip of the iceberg! Many award winning book lists are created by students themselves who offer input after reading books new to the market.
Students in my class will be viewing lists of award winning books and choosing their next good read from these lists. In return, they will write their own book review to post on this very blogspot! If you are looking for a good book to read you might want to check out book lists at perfectionlearning.com/iabookawards or ALA.org/awardsgrants/index.cfm, and very soon you will see student book reviews at this location as well!
Reach for the stars readers! Travel to a new place or be someone you've always wanted to be, you can do it between the covers of a good book!

Schneider Family Book Award
Waiting for Normal is about Addie, a 13 year old girl who is waiting for normal. She doesn't have a very normal life. For instance, she lives in a bright, yellow trailer on the side of the street! In the minimart by her "house", she meets 3 friends. Rick, owner of her favorite restaurant, Numbskull Dorry's, Elliot, Rick's husband and owner of the minimart, and Soula, her favorite hippie. When Addie finds out that Soula has cancer, she is heartbroken. "3 down,2 to go", as she would say. She lives with Mommers, her mom, who is gone for weeks at a time. Will she ever find normal? I think this book deserves the Schneider Family Award because it is a great book and it deserved the award. I also think it deserves it because it was very heartwarming and it should be a classic.

Iowa Teen Award
Mirenda Evens lives a fairly normal life in Western Pennsylvania. But when a meteorite hits the Moon, it sends our whole planet spinning. The climate changes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and earthquakes all reak havoc on Earth. While Mirenda is fairly safe, winter comes early wipping out families with starvation and no heat because electric companies have closed. The book is Mirendas's point of view on the new world that she lives in. When all of her family has made it through, she realizes that family can help you get through anything, making that the moral of this hopefully fiction story.
Life as we knew it deserved the award it recieved hands down. This book made readers including myself realize that something like this could actually happen to our planet. It opened up something new for me, because who realy listens to the world coming to an end. With the fairly new movie "2012," it is just a reminder that this could happen. But, as I'm going on and on about the world ending I realized also that this book transported me, it took my attention throughout the day, and I never wanted to put it down. That's what I look for in a book, and since this book could do that for me I totally agree that it deserves this award.

Iowa Teen Award
Scat is a book about a boy named Nick. Nick really loves his dad, but then he has to go to war. Nick and his dad e-mail back and forth every day. Nick also has a friend named Marta. One day while they were on a field trip, a fire started behind the trees. Everybody thought it was Smoke, because Smoke was famous for starting fires (and getting terrible grades that cause him to get held back for like, 3 years). Then, the hated Mrs. Starch has to go back in to get a girl named Libby's inhaler, but the thing that starts it all is when she dosent come back. Nick and Marta get curious and decide to start looking for anwsers themselves. After searching, they find that Mrs. Starch has been in the woods helping take care of an endangered panther cub, while Smoke and Twilly (another mysterious animal lover) try to track down its mother. The mother of the panther got scared off by two guys, Jimmy Lee Bayliss and Drake MicBride. They are planning on drilling for oil in a place that belongs to the state. Twilly has other thoughts about that. He slows them down just a bit by tormenting the watch gaurd and taking the markers that took about a week to set up and spelling the word SCAT with them. In the end, Jimmy ends up in jail because Drake pins it all on him, the little baby panther gets safely returned to its mother, and Nick's dad comes home with only one arm, but still does OK.
I do think Scat desereved this award, because it keeps you wanting to know what will happen next throughout the entire thing. It is also not just focused on one person and there daily lives. It shows a lot of different perspectives from different people.

This book won the notable children's book award. This book is about Katniss who is a contestant to the games from district 12. There are twelve districts in Panem, a big country that is ruled by the Capital. The Hunger Games take place once every year. The Hunger Games have two contestants from each district which fight with the other contestants until there is only one left alive. This year, there were some difficult competitors to fight with. Peeta and Katniss are in the games and one of them has to lose since they are the last two, so they get some poisonous berries so they don't have to live without the other. I think this was a very good boook that deserved its award. This book had plenty of action and it made you feel for the characters.

They then get in a fight and make a bet to see who can make the most money in five days. Evan ends up making $103 and Jessie makes $104. ALA Best Middle School Book
Brady lives in Massachusets and has two great friends:J.T. and Digger. But Brady's new neighbors tore apart Digger's grandfathers old farm and built a new house. So, when the three of them were in the backyard of the DiAngelo's,(Brady's neighbors) Mr. DiAngelo caught them and politely told them to get off his property and to not do it again. So, later that night, Digger had a plan for revenge, because Mr.DiAngelo told him to get off his grandfathers old property. Digger also persuaded J.T. to help. And Brady figured out why his best friends were ignoring him. They didn't even congratulate him after he saved Be,(the DiAngelo's son) because they were afraid. And to conclude, Brady and his friends keep a secret for a long time.
And I think that Red Kayak deserved its award of ALA Best Middle School, because it is full of things that might be true and is almost as if you were apart of the book in a way.

I think Dicey's Song is a very good book but kind of slow paced so it doesn't make you always want to keep reading. Over all I think Dicey's Song deserves the Newbery Metal that is won.

Far North is about a boy from Texas who goes up north to see his dad, and he arranges for a bush-pilot to take him around sight seeing. His roommate decided to drop out and go home, and an old man needs medical attention, so they fly on the plane with them. They crash and the pilot drowns. From then on out it is a life struggle. The old man used to live off the land so he got Gabe and Raymond through it. Then he died. So there on out it is just Gabe and Raymond tryin to survive. I reccomend this book to anybody who loves the outdoors.
I read the book Storm Warriors by Elisa Carbone. Its about a boy named Nathan who wants to be a surfmen but his dad doesnt agree with his dream very well. He later finds out why his dad doesnt agree with him being a surfmen. The surfmen dont like having other races on the boat cause this was way back in the 1890's not very many surfmen got along but the home town crew of surfmen loved having Nathan on board teaching him things about a surfboat. I reccomend this book to everyone it one the Jefferson cup award
