October 4th - 8th, 2010

First, my apologies for not posting any notes for last week! I will try to keep those weeks to a minimum.

Language for the week of October 4th:

During Language this week we will continue to study grammar skills using DOL which you will find below with instructions. We will practice our handwriting skills using the Quote of the Day and we will review the overall writing process and study sentence structure.

Last week we visited www.typesofsentences.blogspot.com for a great explanation of subjects and predicates as well as some fun games to help us better understand the purpose of each part of a sentence. Please feel free to visit that site for extra practice whenever you have a spare minute or two.

Reading (SCR) for the week of October 4th:

Last week students were introduced to a new comprehension activity called, Dictated Writing. We will be using the same story for all grades this week as we continue to fine tune what we know about the process of Dictated Writing. Our story this week is called, "Discovery." As is typical in SCR class we will learn the new vocabulary for the story on Monday, listen to the story on Tuesday and follow up with the Dictated Writing activity. On Thursday, the students study their vocabulary by working on their vocabulary cards and they will finish the week with a vocabulary test on Friday.

If students utilize their time to work in class well, there should be no need to study for the vocabulary test outside of class. HOMEWORK for READING (SCR) this week is to read 20 minutes per day outside of the classroom and complete the reading log each day including a parent or teacher signature. Reading logs are collected each Monday and those not turned in on time are deducted 10 points off of their total grade.
