November 15th - November 19th, 2010

Well, the teacher's have had in-service and are ready to hit the books (NOT literally).  The student's have had an extra day off and are probably needing an extra day to recoup, but YOU CAN'T, so here we go!

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page for spelling and DOL.

Reading

This week the 7th and 8th grade advanced reading classes will begin a new book.  The 7th Graders will be reading, The Red Pony by John Steinbeck and the 8th graders will be reading, Nothing but the Truth by Avi.  The 6th grade students will hopefully complete their reading of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

During SCR class this week we will be listening to a story by Dr. Seuss titled, "Oh the Places You'll Go."  Dr. Seuss' message to the reader in the story is about making good choices which can apply to so many aspects in our lives.  The reading comprehension tools we will focus on will be visualizing and making connections.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO COMPLETE YOUR READING LOG.  YOU WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO HAVE MONDAY FILLED OUT ON YOUR LOG DUE TO THE NO SCHOOL DAY ON THE 15TH.  THE COLOR OF THE LOG THIS WEEK IS***ORANGE***!  It is the student's responsibility to fill out the date, pages read, location they read at, and a 2 -3 sentence summary.  It is the parent/guardian or teacher's job to sign off on the log.

Language Arts

This week the 6th grade students will discuss strategies to gather details for a writing assignment.  We will discuss clustering (you may know it better as webbing) and then look at different types of graphic organizers that may be helpful to organize the information we have gathered.  Our next writing topic will be about which animal they feel would make the best pet.

The 7th grade students will finish up a short unit on becoming a better thinker which talks about the use of mnemonic devices to help us remember things.  They will then discuss the different types of graphic organizers that are available when gathering information and begin work on their next writing project which will be an animal report.

Of course, we will continue our study of DOL and spelling which you will find printed below.  Please copy the spelling into your planners.  The DOL should be copied into student Journals, each day should be on a separate page and copied just as it is found on the blog.  Then, use editing marks to make the necessary corrections in each of the sentence.  Please be sure to make the corrections!  It isn't enough just to copy the sentences, you need to put the time into making corrections as well.
