Reading and Language Arts Schedule for the Week of November 8th - November 12th

First, I apologize for the late posting of this week's blog!  I truly took the weekend off and went out of town with my family, then I spent Sunday afternoon enjoying the amazing weather outside.  Now it is time to focus on the week ahead.

Parents-  Please check your child's planner daily for assignment changes.  I am encouraging ALL students to write assignments in their planners as they are given.  We will be moving forward in our language curriculum this week and students will need to stay on top of their assignments.

Reading (SCR)

Advanced Reading students in all grade levels will continue their reading of assigned texts this week.  7th and 8th graders will need to finish their novel by Thursday.  There will be vocabulary, blogging, and comprehension to do with the reading assignment as well.

Students in SCR will be following the planned format this week beginning with vocabulary study on Monday, a Read Aloud Think Aloud on Tuesday followed by a dictated writing activity that will probably carry over into Wednesday, and finally we will further our study of vocabulary on Thursday and Friday.  Remember,  you are responsible for all of the cards in your card box.  You do not truly know the meaning of vocabulary if you only learn them for one test.  The 7th and 8th graders will be working on the short story entitled, "The Mothman of West Virginia" this week and the 6th graders will be working on "Tell-Tale Heart."

Language

You will find the Spelling lists and DOL for this week following the brief description of what we will be covering in class.  Students in ALL grades will be given their weekly Journal writing assignment and the graphic organizer on Monday.  This assignment will be due on Friday at the beginning of class.  This week we will be grading based on your completed organizer, the use of your gathered information to complete your paragraph, as well as capitalization and punctuation.  New this week will be the use of a special word study web cite to learn the meaning of Greek roots.  We will study these roots throughout the week and will be quizzed over them on Friday along with spelling and DOL.

The 6th graders will be finishing their autobiographical papers and turning them in NO LATER THAN TUESDAY.  We will then move on to learning how to gather details and the use of graphic organizers. 6th graders will also continue their study of comma rules.

The 7th graders will be moving on to two new units this week.  First, we will talk about becoming better thinkers using mnemonic devices and making connections.  Then we will also discuss gathering details and different ways to record the information that we gather.  The 7th graders will talk about different kinds of nouns this week as well, including common, proper, concrete, and abstract.

  1. Mrs. Larson,

The "Tell-Tale Heart" is one of my all time favorite stories! It gives me chills just thinking about how it ends...

I hope your students enjoy it. Thanks for all your work.
